The Right Order to Layer Your Nightly Routine

The Right Order to Layer Your Nightly Routine

The order you apply skincare products in isn't a minor detail. It changes how well each product actually works. The general rule is thinnest to thickest, so each layer can absorb before the next one sits on top of it. Here's how that plays out with a serum, a mask, a cream, and (if you're using one) a device.

Step 1: Cleanse. Start with clean, slightly damp skin: humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid work best when there's already some moisture on the surface to pull from.

Step 2: Serum. Apply your Hyaluronic Acid Serum first, while skin is still damp. This is the thinnest, most concentrated layer, and it needs direct contact with skin to do its job. Nothing should go on before it.

Step 3: Mask (optional, a few nights a week). A Silicone Face Mask worn over serum helps hold the product against skin instead of letting it evaporate, effectively giving the serum more time to absorb while you relax. If you're using a device like the Glow Beauty Massager instead of a mask that night, this is typically when it's used: pressing the serum in with light and microcurrent rather than sealing it under silicone.

Step 4: Moisturizer. Finish with your Hyaluronic Moisturizer. This is the thickest layer and the last step for a reason: its job is to seal everything underneath it in, and it works best as the final barrier rather than underneath other products.

Frequency. None of this needs to be complicated: ten minutes, once a day, is enough for the routine to do its job. Skipping days won't undo progress, but consistency is what the results are actually built on.

If this order sounds familiar, it's because it's exactly how we built the Renewal Ritual: serum, mask, and cream, in the sequence above, as one set instead of three separate decisions.
